Don’t miss this chance to enjoy some fine local jazz and lend your support to the street children of Quito, Ecuador! All proceeds from this concert will go directly to UBECI, a nonprofit in Ecuador that provides social and academic support to street children in Quito.
Jazz pianist and composer Jeff Loeb, a longtime Maynard resident, has been active in the Boston-area jazz scene for over 40 years. He appears frequently at Concord’s Colonial Inn, the Acton Jazz Café, Maynard’s River Rock Grill, and other local venues. He has composed jazz, country and children’s music for PBS and NPR, and manages a home recording studio where he works as a professional narrator and audio producer. Jeff will be joined by bassist Tom Sheppard, drummer Mark Fairweather, and area soloists and vocalists.
In 2010, Jeff traveled to Ecuador, where he volunteered for UBECI, a small nonprofit based in Quito. Deeply moved by the passion and commitment of UBECI's small staff, Jeff took on the role as UBECI's North American volunteer coordinator and fundraiser after his third visit in 2011. UBECI’s mission is to reduce the working hours of street and market children in Quito and to enroll them in public schools. Without this early childhood social and academic support, these children never get the education needed to break the cycle of poverty. A US registered non-profit with a staff of only five, UBECI has placed over 300 children in school in the last five years, relying on donations and volunteers from all over the world. For more information, visit UBECI.org.
During the break, a short video documenting UBECI's work will be shown, as well as an attempt to Skype with UBECI's director in Ecuador, Monica Rivadeniera. Café LaMattina is a Euro-style café in the heart of Maynard whose owner has offered his venue to support UBECI. Coffee, crepes and sandwiches will be available.
