The wooden structure was built by Levi Cheney, a Maynard carpenter. The tower floor is 12 feet square and anchored by iron bars seen on the floors below.

The tower was refurbished in 1980 by then owner Digital Equipment Corporation, replacing some wooden trim, old nails, copper on the dome, along with other weatherproofing and repairs. A paint sample showed nine layers of paint had been applied over the prior 88 years.
